Chapter 8

Calling it a TIC is rational, yet it still hurts to think most of the people around me will outlive me by decades. But Ephi’s brought up something Entoni said. “What kind of cure?”

Ephi sways. “I don’t know for sure, only that it sounds like the sacrifice for most isn’t worth it. But I guess to her, it’s worth it.”

“Why help me? Why give me this?” I lift the platform.

She looks me over with pity, then returns to her work. “Because I hope you find the cure.”

It's time I get moving again. “Varys?”

“Go back the way you came. Take the next underground entrance to the north. That tunnel is long and netdead, but it will bring you up into Varys.”

“Thanks.” I sense her watching me leave. My implant confirms with a nudge goodbye from hers. Part of me wants to stay, to learn how her drones work and what exactly it is that she does. But I have to find Kaisha.

I make it underground again and find an isolated corner to set up the mobile pad. Unfolding it, I check the network connections, stand on it to access the net, and then call out to my team.

Heckle is the only one who responds. Daron! I’m glad you’re still alive. Where are you?

I had to run like the others. Have you heard anything?

Heckle>> Yeah, JamNut and HNTR made it to HQ, but three more Mind Breakers are dead. They were mugged on their way to work. Cognisync is on lockdown, and no one is allowed to leave. Cybersecurity is looking for several people in the vicinity. So whatever you do, don't go there.

Di-Lo? I ask as gently as I can.

Gone. I downloaded her implant and gave HQ an image of who killed her.

An image manifests in my dashboard. When I read the description, I'm confused.

I know. Heckle grumbles. How does a water sanitation engineer end up working for Dark Angel?

I have a theory regarding the man's size and likely mental malleability, but my lack of movement makes breathing harder. I’ve got to go, but I’ll check back later.

Signing off, I pack up the mobile pad and hike back up onto the streets of the dark city, then find the next north secret passageway and follow it into Varys.

The tunnel is long and narrow. Passing people makes me uncomfortable. I try not to cringe each time I have to slide by someone else, afraid they’re going to work for Dark Angel and want to stab me in the back like Quelish.

Someone grabs me out of the shadows and pulls me into them. My heart lurches, stealing my breath.

I stagger through the rocky passageway, pushed along by their hands until we enter a small chamber. When I spin around to confront who has forced me down here, I find Kaisha holding a finger to her lips and motioning for me to slow my breaths.

It isn't easy, but I do my best. Her visor lights up with scans of my respirator. She makes a few adjustments on a new device and then clips in a battery.
